Travel & Transport

Domestic flights, road transfers, rail, and ferry — everything you need to move around Kenya with confidence.

Road travel

Kenya's road network connects most major destinations. Self-drive, hired transfers, and private drivers are the most comfortable options. Prices vary significantly depending on distance, vehicle type, operator, and season — always confirm costs in advance.

All road prices vary — we'll help you arrange the right transfer for your itinerary.

Nairobi City Transfers

Prices vary
JKIA → CBD

Options
Uber, hotel transfer, private driver

Uber operates reliably from JKIA and around Nairobi. Hotel transfers meet you at arrivals. For Wilson Airport connections allow at least 45 minutes from JKIA. Private drivers can be arranged for your full Nairobi stay.

Nairobi → Amboseli

Via Namanga Road — approx 4–5 hrs

Prices vary
Drive Time
4–5 hours
Road
Tarmac to Namanga, dirt to gate

A popular road transfer. The tarmac ends before the park gate — a 4WD is strongly recommended. Most camps arrange their own transfers from Nairobi.

Nairobi → Maasai Mara

Via Narok — approx 5–6 hrs

Prices vary
Drive Time
5–6 hours
Road
Mix of tarmac and rough dirt
Rainy Season
Can be significantly longer

Possible by road but most visitors fly. The last section into the Mara can be very rough after rain. Flying is strongly recommended if budget allows. Road transfer suits those who enjoy the journey and want to stop along the way.

Mombasa → Diani Beach

Via Likoni Ferry — approx 1–1.5 hrs

Prices vary
Transfer Time
1–1.5 hours
Ferry
Likoni Ferry — free for pedestrians
Tip
Avoid peak hours

If arriving into Mombasa Airport the road to Diani crosses the Likoni Ferry. Most Diani resorts offer pre-arranged transfers that handle everything including the crossing.

Self-Drive Kenya

Car hire from Nairobi or Mombasa

Prices vary
Requirement
Valid licence + IDP recommended
Drive Side
Left — same as UK
Vehicle
4WD for parks and rural roads

Self-drive works well for Nairobi and highland roads. Most national parks are best explored with a guide. Car hire is available at JKIA and from city operators.

Road travel tips

  • For safari parks, flying is almost always preferable to road if budget allows
  • A 4WD is essential for park roads and most rural routes
  • Kenya drives on the left
