Overview

The Rift Valley packs volcanic craters, hot springs, gorges and a walking-safari island into an area you can cover in four days without ever flying. Cycle among zebra in Hell's Gate, hike the full rim of a dormant volcano, and walk unfenced among giraffe on Crescent Island.

Day by day

Day 1

Nairobi to Naivasha

Depart Nairobi, drive via the Great Rift Valley escarpment viewpoint (2 hrs).

Afternoon boat safari — hippos, pelicans, fish eagles.

Lodge dinner on the lakeshore.

Day 2

Hell's Gate

Cycle into Hell's Gate National Park among zebra, giraffe and buffalo.

Guided walk through the Ol Njorowa gorge — hot springs and narrow slot walls.

Fischer's Tower rock climbing session.

Sundowner at the lodge.

Day 3

Mount Longonot

Early start for the Longonot ascent (2,776m) — 3 hrs to the rim.

Full crater rim circuit for those with the legs.

Packed lunch at the top. Descend and recover.

Hot springs soak or a lakeside massage.

Day 4

Crescent Island & Crater Lake

Walking safari on Crescent Island — zebra, giraffe and wildebeest on foot.

Crater Lake Game Sanctuary walk in the afternoon.

Farewell campfire dinner under the acacias.

Day 5

Departure

Sunrise paddleboard or kayak on Lake Naivasha.

Drive Naivasha → Nairobi with a stop at Kariandusi or the escarpment markets.

Transfer to JKIA.
