Best Time To Visit Kenya

The Two Dry Seasons — When Most People Visit

Kenya's dry seasons are January–February and June–October. Clear skies, firm roads, and wildlife concentrated around water sources make game viewing easier and more rewarding than at any other time of year.

June through October is the headline season. The Great Migration crosses the Mara River from July onwards, and this is when Kenya's safari parks are at their most dramatic. Book camps and lodges at least six months ahead — sometimes a year for the best properties.

January – February

Warm, dry, and uncrowded. Excellent for the coast — Diani and Lamu are at their best. Amboseli is stunning with clear Kilimanjaro views. A quieter alternative to the peak July–August rush.

June – October

The gold standard. Best overall safari conditions, the Migration, and reliable weather across most of Kenya. Cooler mornings make game drives genuinely comfortable. High demand — book far ahead.

The Rainy Seasons — Better Than You Think

Kenya has two rainy seasons: long rains (March–May) and short rains (October–December). Neither should put you off entirely.

The long rains bring lush landscapes, dramatically lower prices, and empty lodges. Birding is exceptional. Road access to remote parks can be tricky, but Nairobi, the coast, and well-maintained parks work perfectly. November is one of the most underrated months — brief showers, green parks, and beautiful photography light.

Summer Bunny Tip

If you're combining safari and coast, January–February is the sweet spot — excellent Mara conditions plus Diani at peak beach season, without the July crowds or prices.

The Short Answer

For safaris: July–October or January–February. For beaches: January–March or late December. For budget travel: May or November. For doing both: January–February, no question.
